Even as turn of the sixteenth-century London saw the foundation of the Savoy, a new model hospital built on European humanist principles, a chorus of literary/satirical voices in the 1520s and 30s combined reformed religious perspectives on purgation and intercession with concern about poor relief and the increase of “vagabonds” besieging the metropolis. Simon Fish’s radical Supplication for the Beggars (ca. 1529) carried forward the earlier lollard argument for disendowment and intersected with governmental proposals for poor relief that involved hospital reform, albeit with few concrete results. The last section of this chapter offers an extended consideration of Robert Copland’s little-studied poem, The Hye Way to the Spyttell Hous (ca. 1536). This work, which has not been adequately understood in the context of hospital history, offers a nuanced view of St. Bartholomew’s contemporary predicament and expresses a complex understanding of the hospital’s historical role and possible future in the city.
